How
Baldness Happens?
If any of the stages of hair growth are disrupted, the individual
may become bald. For example, if follicles shut down (meaning
that they stay in the resting phase, and then shed the hair)
instead of growing new hairs, there will be less hair on the
head. Another reason might be interference with the formation
of new hair cells at the root during the growing phase; this
occurs with some anti-cancer drugs. If follicles have been
destroyed (as they might be by, for example, a bum, or by
some skin diseases), there will be baldness in that area.
An individual can also look bald if the hair is growing but
is so fragile that they break just as they emerge from the
follicle.
Facts
of Hair Loss
It is normal to lose 50-100 hairs from the head each day.
Each hair on the head grows for about 2-3 years before being
shed.
Approximately 50 million men and 30 million women suffer from
hair loss.
Scalp hair grows at a rate of about 1cm (just under 1/2 an
inch) a month.
We each have about 100,000 hairs on the scalp.
WHO
(World Health Organization) scores hair loss according to
five levels or degrees:
in level zero (0), no change in the hair's appearance
occurs;
in level one (1), a slight thinning with minimal
(reversible) hair loss is seen;
in level two (2), a noticeable thinning shows
up with moderate (reversible) hair fall;
in level three (3), a patchy baldness with areas
of bare scalp becomes apparent,
but it is reversible;
in level four (4), total irreversible hair loss
has taken place.
